MN Midterm Elections and Help To Yemen!

So in the past I have felt like voting was necessary, but if I had made the choice not to vote or didn't make it to the polls that it wouldn't be a big deal, it's just one missing ballot right?

Boy was I wrong, as I have grown older and seen politicians in office who outright spew hate against people of color, the LGBT community, the Muslim community, people with disabilities, women and immigrants/refugees, I realize that we have the power to choose who represents us and who create laws and change laws that affect my life and the lives of those around me.

As a good friend of mine said after the results of the mid term elections, 2016: Congress created the Muslim Ban (which restricted travel to and from certain Muslim Majority countries) and in 2018 Muslims responded by running and getting elected to spots in Congress!

It is so inspiring to see Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, the first Muslim women being elected to Congress! It shows us that we have the ability by voting to elect people with our values, beliefs and backgrounds that will advocate for us and think of us when big decisions in the country are being made. It shows that Allah has power over all things and He can bring success and status to those whom He wills.

It also inspires other communities that they can run for office as well, it doesn't matter your religion, or cultural background, if you immigrated to the U.S, who is your life partner and what your socioeconomic status is, you have the ability to be able to make change and if God is on your side, no one can prevent you from getting to where you want to be !

If you are someone that doesn't think voting matters or it is a sinful or harmful thing to do, I really hope the results of this election have opened your heart and mind. Think of our current president today and all the harm he is causing, the sad and unintelligent things he says, can we be so angry and upset about what he does and says when we are not doing our civic duty by voting?

Think of all the countries or places where the government does not allow the people to vote or chose who their leader is, or voting is only for the upper class or you as a woman or poor person do not get the right. Think of how in the past in our country or even today there are certain types of people who were/are barred from voting! We have come a long way and we still need to go longer ways to fix the discrimination rooted in this country but it starts with exercising our right to vote which people fought to have years ago and we finally have the freedom to do so.

There is a hadith that personally makes me feel like I should do whatever I can in this world to help those around me and fight for those less fortunate, the poor, the sick, the hungry and the oppressed. The prophet (peace be upon him) said that if we see something evil to take action , if we are not able to do so, then say something about it, if we are not able to do that, then hate it in our hearts and that is the lowest of faith!

Think of our brothers and sisters currently starving in Yemen, experiencing such a brutal famine, think of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Yemen, Iraq and various other countries in Africa and the middle east who are suffering at the hands of dictators. Think of the bombs being dropped on their homes and on their hospitals and schools, and how our nation has started this and provided aid to this war. Think of them when you pray, think of them when you vote because our officials that we elect to Congress make decisions about our tax money that goes into the suffering of our people.

May Allah grant success to those elected and help them to make good change in our community and in the world!!
