Surah Al Imran Verses 169-171
And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,
Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
They receive good tidings of favor from Allah and bounty and [of the fact] that Allah does not allow the reward of believers to be lost -
The pain, fear and loss our community has been suffering is indescribable. Especially to the families of the victims of those killed in the Two Mosques shootings last week. May Allah grant them support, love, patience and peace in their hearts during this difficult time. I hope they find comfort knowing their loves ones have returned to their Lord and will receive the highest of rewards In Sha Allah. May Allah grant those who were killed in cold blood, Jennah Tul Furdaus and reunite them with their loved ones in the afterlife.
Nothing truly bad happens to a believer, their souls may not be with us but like the verses mention above, they are not truly gone. They are in a better place and they received an honorable passing, to return to Allah on the best of days a Friday, in the Masjid and around Jummah prayer time. It is a beautiful way to leave this Earth even if the method in which they were taken was disgusting and terrible. We can only hope and pray how we leave this Earth is only in a state of worship and when Allah is truly pleased with us.
What I always notice after a tragedy, is how the community responds, how we gather together to cope, mourn and pray for those affected. How we are quick to call out the injustice and to make launchgood or gofundme campaigns to help our brothers and sisters. How even if we are not in that country or belong to that ethnicity or religion, that we still band together because we are all human and we all hurt when one of us is hurt.
My boss who isn't even Muslim had reached out to me the day after the incident, saying she was sorry to hear what happened and understood that everyone is shocked and hurt but she especially knew it hit the Muslim community pretty hard. To have those from different faiths and backgrounds showing sympathy and condolences show that even in a world of hatred and racism, there is kindness and love.
"O You who believe! Be upholders of justice, bearing witness for God alone, even against yourselves or your parents and relatives. Whether they are rich or poor, God is well able to look after them. Do not follow your own desires and deviate from the truth. If you twist or turn away, God is aware of what you do." (Quran 4:135).
Those who hate Islam and its followers want nothing more than to see us suffer, crumble and fall apart. They want us to disappear from their communities, for us to not show our faces and to "go back to where we came from." We will not stay idly and quietly by while our brothers and sisters are oppressed and murdered, not only in the tragedy that occurred in New Zealand, but to our brothers and sisters who are being forced into camps to change their religion in China, to our brothers and sisters being bombed and having their families and homes destroyed in Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Iran, and to the religious and ethnic cleansing and abuse occurring in Burma and other parts of the world.
This unfortunate incident is a reminder to us all that this worldly life is very short, we do not know when our last day will be and that our true home will be in the afterlife, In Sha Allah in Jennah. It is a reminder that there are people who want to tear us down and are happy when injustice hits our people. There is nothing more sad and disturbing when those in power chose to not call out that it was the Muslim community affected and some who blame the Muslim community itself for the violence that hit our brothers and sisters. This is a reminder that we cannot escape death, we will all die, and that we need to work for Jennah, for us to show compassion, love and understanding to people no matter where they come from and what their story is. Let us show mercy to the people, so Allah will show us mercy. Let us think and reflect more on what we do and say, on the words of Allah and the stories of the Prophets (peace be upon them all) and the legacies and examples they left behind.
I hope if you are someone who was affected by this incident whether it was physically, emotionally or mentally, that you get the help you need. When we see violence all the time, sometimes you become numb to it or sometimes it takes over your heart and strikes you with fear and sadness. Know that you are not alone, there are others feeling the same pain as you, so let us reach out to and be there for one another in times of hardship and even in times of ease. Below are some resources and links to coping mechanisms and also to a donation link to help the families and community in New Zealand.
May Allah protect all our brothers and sisters around the world. May Allah grant ease and strength to anyone affected by violence, trauma or sickness. May Allah keep us firm on our faith and keep us connected to those who do and say what Allah loves and what pleases Him. May Allah give us hope in times of despair, May He give us opportunities to do good deeds and be there for one another. May He forgive our sins and accept our good deeds and help us fight our desires and bad deeds. May we leave this Earth not until we are in a state that is pleasing to Allah. Ameen.
