Reflection on Surah Hud, Verses 36-47
Asalam alaykum loves, we are basically halfway through Ramadan! Tomorrow is Day 15 and you should give yourself a pat on the back! There is still time for you to achieve your goals, make plenty more dual and do more good deeds, connect with the Quran and ask for forgiveness! For some of us we may not have been able to fast or still cannot fast, but remember there are still things you can do like give charity, read Quran and help your family out around the house or feed the hungry or fasting people. There is a hadith talking about the 30 days of Ramadan split into 3 sections, the first ten are meant for mercy (asking Allah for his rahma or mercy), the middle ten are for asking Allah for forgiveness and the last ten days are asking Allah to be saved from the Hellfire.
“It (Ramadhan) is the month, whose beginning is mercy, its middle, forgiveness and its end, emancipation from the fire. (of hell)”(of hell) — Bihar al-Anwar, Vol.: 93, Pg.: 342
Dua for the First Ten Days: Ya Haayu Ya Qayamuu Birahmatika Astegees
Translation: Oh the Eternally Living One, Oh the Self Subsisting One, I seek help in your Mercy
Dua for the Middle Ten Days: Astugfirulaha Rabi Min Kulli Zambiyon Wa Atoobuliaiyh
Translation: I ask forgiveness of my sin from Allah who is my Lord and I turn towards Him
Dua for the last ten days: Alluhumma Ajirini Minan Naar
Translation: Oh Allah! Save me from the fire!
So today I just wanted to reflect on some verses I cam across in Surah Tul Hud:
11:36- "And it was revealed to Noah that, "No one will believe from your people except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing."
37: "And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are [to be] drowned."
38: "And he constructed the ship, and whenever an assembly of the eminent of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule."
39: "And you are going to know who will get a punishment that will disgrace him [on earth] and upon whom will descend an enduring punishment [in the Hereafter]."
40: "[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, "Load upon the ship of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed." But none had believed with him, except a few."
41: "And [Noah] said, "Embark therein; in the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."
42: "And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Noah called to his son who was apart [from them], "O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers."
43: "[But] he said, "I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water." [Noah] said, "There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy." And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned."
44: "And it was said, "O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain]." And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and the ship came to rest on the [mountain of] Judiyy. And it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people."
45: "And Noah called to his Lord and said, "My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and indeed, Your promise is true; and You are the most just of judges!"
46: "He said, "O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant."
47: "[Noah] said, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers."
So there were a lot of lessons to take from these verses, the first verse is speaking specifically to Prophet Noah but it can also speak volumes to us about not being worked up or upset about those who do not believe in our faith Islam. So we do not have to concern ourselves the deeds they commit because that is between them and Allah, we can give them the message and they decide what to do with it. Noah was then told to construct a ship and to not worry about those are doing wrong because Allah will deal with them their punishment. Even when they ridiculed what he was doing when he built the ship, he told them they will be ridiculed for what they are doing. What I take from this is, even if I see people committing sins and corruption on Earth, even if they do not see the consequences of their actions in this life, Allah will deal with them. Also people make fun of Islam and bash and slander us, but they are making fun of themselves for not understanding. Allah then says Noah will soon understand who will get a punishment in this life and a punishment in the hereafter.
Noah is then commanded to load the ship he built with a pair of each animal ,his family and the believers, but there were very few who believed to begin with so not many people joined him. I liked the next verse where Noah tells the people to come aboard in the name of Allah, because Allah is the most forgiving and merciful, which is what this month of Ramadan is about! Prophet Noah Alay Salam, says to his son come aboard the ship to save himself and do not be among the disbelievers. His son refuses and says he will be fine if he goes to the top of the mountain it will save him from the water, but Noah says no one can protect you except if Allah grant you mercy and unfortunately because his son did not listen he was drowned. What I learned from this was no one can protect us except Allah and if he grants us mercy no one or no thing can cause us harm.
Then the water swallows up the water, and the Sky stopping raining and the ship came to a stop on the mountain Judiyy. This shows me that Allah has the power to wipe away people who do not believe in His message, which can include us if we do not believe! Prophet Noah Alay Salam did not despair about his son, he knew Allah was true in his promise of wiping away those that do not believe, that He is the Most Just. Allah then tells him that his son was not truly his family, he was one that was not righteous and tells him to not ask about what he doesn't know about otherwise he could be among the ignorant. Then Prophet Noah Alay Salam says he seeks refuge in asking about what he has no knowledge about and have mercy on him otherwise he will be among the losers.
The last two verses showed me that we do not have all the knowledge, even if we study and go to college and get various degrees we will not know everything. Allah is the All Knowing, He knows better than we do, so sometimes we can ask questions to find out answers but sometimes we won't find the answers we are looking for. There are things and questions on this Earth we won't fully understand or know about and that is okay. I like the dua Noah asks, to be protected from over questioning what we don't understand, (because it can lead to confusion and disbelief) and that without Allah's mercy we will be nothing.
Have a lovely day! May Allah protect us from doubt and disbelief !
