End SARS Now: End Police Brutality in Nigeria
Since the beginning of October, there has been a rise of protests in Nigeria over the issue of police brutality. There is a specific task force within the police meant to stop violence and years ago it was useful in preventing crime. Now they have used their power to hurt those they are meant to protect. They have raped, mugged and harassed innocent Nigerians. It is time for us to use our influence on social media to bring awareness to this issue and put pressure on the Nigerian government to do something to stop this.
“Over the last two weeks, an outpouring of support for Nigerian protesters has played out on Twitter, with various hashtags, but predominantly #EndSARS.
Sars stands for the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
Accusations of Sars officers robbing, attacking and even killing people go back years but a new wave of protest started at the beginning of October.
SARS just shot a young boy dead at Ughelli, Delta state as we speak. In front of Wetland hotels. They left him for dead on the road side and drove away with the deceased Lexus Jeep. I have videos....” tweet by AfricaOfficial2 aka Chinyelugo
The Tweeter, who calls himself Chinyelugo, told the BBC that he normally keeps a low profile on Twitter but that he personally had been harassed by the police previously so when a friend told him about what appeared to be another attack by police he felt the need to tweet it.
"If Sars see you as a young person who is successful with a nice car, they will harass you and extort money from you," he explained.”
Keep them in your prayers, I have heard they have disbanded SARS but they just have moved the officers around which means the corruption is going on. Keep them in your prayers and safely join protests if you can.
